The New Thirsty Gile

Blasters Show and the Acoustic Open Stage
The Thirsty Ear is under new management and their first big show is going to be the Blasters on Saturday November 5th. It's the first time they have been in Columbus in over 10 years. No Dave Alvin but the new album 4-11-44 is as good as any of the earlier stuff. Last years show at the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland was great so to see them in this intimate room should be even better.

Ear Shot Week in (Re)View
Topic: Shows Category: For Tuesday
Posted by: cringe on Nov 01, 2005
I'm mutating the Ear Shot updates into a kinda visual week in review. I've added new photos and videos of Audion, Dr. Grimaldi Circus Fantastique, High Jinks Dance Company, Mt. Cyanide, and Queen Mae and the Bells to Ear Shot Raw.
I spent much of the last week either tweaking the Wexner site (see previous article) or working reopening events at Wexner. I did get to see part of Bill T. Jones dance performance then cut out of the big Gala dinner early enough to catch most of the show at Little Brother's Saturday night.

The audience was thin at first and I missed the first round of Dr. Grimaldi's circus act, but I did get there in time to catch my first Audion show in months. Too many months. Both members of Audion also play in Cinema Eye which I know tends to keep them busy - especially with Cinema Eye recently dropping from a 4-piece to a 3-piece. To quote myself from a couple years ago when Audion released one of my favorite recordings of the year, "Take the punk rock performance aesthetic of a band like Gaunt and the off-kilter musical ambition of Brainiac then roll it into a two piece vocalist/guitarist and drummer/keyboardist/sampler and yer close to Audion." This performance did seem a little rough around the edges and low on energy. But I missed hearing the songs live; and it was still kinda a slow night at this point - Halloween weekend usually is slow with all the shows, events and parties going on everywhere.
Next High Jinks Dance Company entered adding a sort of Mardi Gras feel. The stilted skeletons were the highlights for me. Dr. Grimaldi re-emerged with some fire breathing and some mini-trapeze acrobatics with one of the dancers. Check Ear Shot for more pictures and videos of this.

This was my first time seeing Queen Mae and the Bells, which includes members of the BLD collective and 16 Bitch Pile Up. Their set was too short for me to say much. I will say it was nice to see an experimental noise band take a more minimal and resonant approach to the genre rather than the harsh and loud shock-value approach so many have run into the ground.
Last on the bill was Mt. Cyanide. I thought this band was horrible the first time I saw them. They seemed unpracticed and lost most of their set. But that was long ago at a Cafe Bourbon Street far, far away. I've seen them 3 times since and have to say they have some great, inventively simple songs - especially from the guitar standpoint - that kinda fit nicely into the whole garage rock with a disco/dance beat style that the kids love these days. They ain't necessarily the greatest singers, but the melodies and harmonies come through fine.

New Wexner And Playaway Web Sites
Topic: Web Site Category: For Tuesday
Posted by: cringe on Nov 01, 2005
Now you can see what I've been working on the last couple months. As part of the Wexner Center for the Arts reopening, my day job redesigned the new Wexner Web site. It went live late last week. I think you'll find the calendar much more functional and easier to use. Um, I was the main programmer on the previous 2 versions of the site too, so I ain't trying to knock anyone here. The previous version just made some calendar tasks difficult. Let me know if ya happen to see any problems.
Playaway is another site I got to work on a little at my day job. The new Playaway Digital site just went live Monday. Playaway isn't exactly local or music related, but it does have a few local ties and a new approach to digital audiobook sales and distribution. For Playaway, the media and the media player are one in the same.
