This is a bill that probably actually happened in the early/mid 1990s at Stache's or Bernie's. Both Clay and Preston Furman have been gone for a few years now. This is just a one off show for them. Greenhorn just officially reestablished their name about a month ago with a CD release under their wings already.

Free Cringe.com/pilation CD for May Birthdays
This show was put together by Supraphonic Studios for Allan Foster's birthday. His brother is/was in Clay and he's played with members of Preston Furman.
Keep reading for my gushing wordiness ...
GREENHORN
Greenhorn has been around off and on all these years. They recently reformed as the Renaissance Doves, but just in time for their CD release a couple weeks ago they decided they weren't fooling anyone with the name. It was the exact same members and a lot of the same songs as Greenhorn, so they changed their name back to Greenhorn. With the reformation, Greenhorn has added some experiments with noise and effects and some nice keyboard balladry to their big loud twangy Midwest guitar rock palette.
The members of Greenhorn are Mark and Dan Spurgeon and Pat and Steve McGann. Yes, 2 sets of brothers which probably explains the tight and volatile chemistry they've had over the years. Various members were also in Bush League All-Stars, Jet Jaguar 5, Magnificent Souls and more.
CLAY
Clay was kinda the Pere Ubu of Columbus. To paraphrase myself ...
"In the early 1990s the foursome known as Clay was one of the most eclectic live acts in town. Anticipation of the next Clay show was always high as you never knew what to expect except that it would likely be a completely different experience than their previous outing ... or, at the very least, different from the majority of the alternatives.
... one of their most memorable and last shows was played behind a curtain on the Bernie's stage. But that's not it. They had someone with a video camera behind the curtain and the TV monitor in front of the curtain for the audience to watch. Of course, the stage front fans began sneaking peeks behind the curtain. By the end of the set, much of that crowd was cloaked behind the curtain with the band. I think the TV monitor was behind the curtain by this point too. So any more restrained audience members saw nothing but ankles and draperies bouncing about.
... drummer Bill did a short stint with Pop Rocks (with Pat Dull and Brett Lewis) then moved off to New York. Guitarists/bassists Wilfoster & Q had project together for a short time. Guitarist Jake and Wilfoster also did some solo tapes. These days Jake and Q are both in Flipping Hades while Wilfoster fronts the Guinea Worms."
The full article that's taken from is actually a pretty good read if I do say so myself. You'll find some MP3s there too.
PRESTON FURMAN
Preston Furman and their label, Lizard Family Records, liked to refer to themselves as "scrap rock" which worked really well for them. Clay and Greenhorn were 2 of their favorite bands and biggest influences - a mixture of that Midwest guitar rock mixed with spastic, schizophrenic experiments with being on the edge of falling apart. They also had a knack for some of the best and most phrenetic rock instrumentals this side of the Who and the Pixies.
Members of Preston Furman went on to be in Grafton, The Bygones, Earwig, The Fiascos, and Chris McCoy & the Gospel

CRINGE COMPILATION FINAL CUT-OFF MAY 7
The deadline for Cringe.com/pilation volume 5 was this past Saturday, April 30, 2005. But to give a chance for those last minute submissions to make it through the mail, anything in my hands or the P.O Box by Saturday, May 7 will still be accepted.
So far we've received submissions from the following bands/artists:
Artists on Volume 3 or 4 are not eligible. All styles of music are encouraged - classical, punk, country, jazz, rock, metal, rap, electronica, avant garde, folk, etc. Personally I like variety and surprises and try pick consultants who span the styles submitted when selecting tracks.
If you've submitted and are not listed above, email be at [email protected]. We are limiting volume 5 to previously unreleased tracks to help us keep the number of submissions more reasonable. Plus, including previously released tracks by bands that end up breaking soon just doesn't seem like the best use of the compilation. Any tracks determined to be previously released (i.e. anything with 500+ copies pressed on CD) will not be used. Feel free to submit new unreleased material if your material represented above has been previously released. See http://www.cringe.com/pilation for submission forms, FAQs and further information.

ABOUT THE BANDS
I remember the days when rock could be unpredictable, scary and fun all at the same time. One of the finest Ohio purveyors of this was Hogscraper. Back in the mid to late 1990s they packed local venues and shared the stage with the likes of The Hairy Patt Band and the Econothugs. After seven years of cursed bad luck, the satanic bluegrass outfit from Cincinnati is undead and back in Columbus. Made up of banjo, washtub bass, drums and sometimes guitar, their fables of devils, Peterbilts, toothpicks and road kill stand on their own as well written songs. But seeing the face-painted bassist stand above all atop his Voodoo stick washtub howling his incantations is one of those images that's hard to forget. It's easy to suspend reality and forget it's all in the name of putting on a complete and memorable show. The band even spoke of bringing a couple pigs heads on stakes for each side of the stage for this show. To be quite honest I'm still not sure if they were serious or not.
Apocalypso is a steel drum led band that's known for its unique and undeniably fun covers of Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Black Sabbath, the Dead Kennedys and scary movie themes - all with the steel drum carrying the melody. They went over so well at the February birthday show that bringing them back with the similarly unique and apocalyptic Hogscraper was an obvious choice.
Smashy Smashy is a fairly new band but includes some veterans of the local rock and punk scene (i.e. members of Bob City, The Staggers, Grafton, and The White Outs). The result is some serious and silly gutter punk meets hardcore.
We may have one other special act from the mid-90s as an added bonus.

ABOUT THE BANDS
Apocalyspso is a steel drum led band that's known for its unique and fun covers of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, the Dead Kennedys and scary movie themes - all with the steel drum carrying the melody.
Chris McCoy will be doing a stripped solo guitar and vocal set with some keyboard accompaniment by band member Jessica Faller. Chris' music and vocal range and richness has drawn many comparisons to Rufus Wainwright, Jeff Buckley and solo Mark Lanegan.
The Wells play a rustic and rowdy mesh of Nick Cave meets Richard Thompson influenced acoustic guitar driven fables and stories. The Wells along with Chris McCoy, would be on my personal list of "Bands to Hear in 2005" had I made such a list.

CRINGE.COM JANUARY BIRTHDAY SHOW
The January Birthday show was a Tsunami Relief benefit done in conjunction with DoneWaiting.com at Little Brother's. Below is the joint release:
You know the tragedy that has happened as a result of the tsunami, so I'm not going to get into it here.
The Columbus music community has responded swiftly, booking a concert Friday, January 28 at Little Brother's. All money from the show will go to the Greater Columbus Red Cross for Tsunami Relief.
Because of the emergency nature of this show, we've not had a lot of time to promote it, so any attention you can give it is greatly appreciated. A note that may warm your heart: when I posted a call for bands to play at the show, I received over 50 offers in 4 days from bands all around Ohio.
If you need any additional information, you can contact me at 614-596-1858.
Additionally, this will be a support show for the new Cringe.com compilation. See note below.

Railroads and Clearcuts is post rock with some vocal and political leanings that make one think of the Clash meets Sweep the Leg Johnny.
Early Empire started as a new project for several members of Superstar Rookie and continues with their own distinctive thick slabs of classy melodic indie rock.
Earwig's Lizard McGee has been among the best songwriters from Ohio for over 10 years now. From heart-on-your-sleeve indie pop full of sincerity to raw guitar rock performed with reckless abandon, Earwig's live set is one of Columbus music's great constants.
A couple months ago we mentioned there were a few anniversaries coming up in the world of Cringe. First October 2004 marked 10 years since we started taking submissions for the first issue or Cringe. There are a few landmarks in December 2004 too ...
The Cringe Store Turns 1
This December marks the 1 year anniversary of The Cringe Store. The online store now features over 120 releases from local bands and labels - possibly the largest single inventory of Columbus and Ohio music available on the Net.
Ear Shot Turns 4
December is also the 4 year anniversary of the Ear Shot photos and videos section of Cringe. With over 400 bands, 900 galleries, 1,000 videos and 14,000 photos I think it's pretty safe to say this is the largest photo and video collection of bands from Columbus and Ohio. Heck, it's probably the largest collection of images of bands from any other single city or state.
This is also a support show for the newest Cringe.com/pilation CD - Volume IV. The new CD includes tracks from all these Ohio bands and artists: Aether, Apocalypso, B.A. Baracus, Denovo, Diet, Doctah X, Earwig, Jinx Palm, Murder Your Darlings, Nobody, et al., Railroads And Clearcuts, Scab Head, Scott Parsons, The Fierce Lime And His Ponytail Assassins, The Last Hotel, The Moist Star, Captain Exploder (The Red Wheelbarrow), The Unlucky Seven, Townsmen, and Trapper John.
Funds raised at this and other support shows go toward paying for this and future Cringe.com/pilation volumes. Applications for Volume 5 are being accepted now. Submission forms and more information are available at http://www.cringe.com/pilation/.

CRINGE.COM RELEASE SHOW AND HALLOWEEN PARTY
It's finally done and here - Cringe.com/pilation Volume IV. The truth is I think this release show is probably more of a release for the people involved in making it than the CD itself. Between band break-ups, music conferences, artwork changes, reproduction permission waivers and general indecision, this CD took a lot of time to finally get out.

A few related notes:
A bit more about the bands:
Lover, Lover
moiststar.topcities.com
A new supergroup of sorts debuting a new line up: Cassie Star of the Moist Star; Milan of Salthorse & Greenlawn Abbey; Amy of the Velveteens & The Alwood Sisters; and Jovan of Gaunt & The Black Swans.
Aether
www.aethersound.com
Layered, instrumental swirlpop and thick ethereal rock sorta like My Bloody Valentine on a smoldering spaceship if you took away the vocals and handed 'em a Les Paul ... Oh, and they show some trippy movies during their set.
Townsmen
www.townsmen-ohio.com
Compared to everything from X and Sonic Youth to Wilco and Van Morrison, if you know Ugly Stick and Bigfoot you'll recognize several Townsmen. There must be something in the water in Delaware, Ohio this time afflicting the players with some off-kilter take on appalachian rock and punk rave-ups and wind-downs.
Fierce Lime and his Ponytail Assassins
www.woosleyband.com
Not quite as drunk as Goaded By Vices, but give this Woosley Band alter-ego a few years. There's some nice acoustic Americana textures mixed with some strong doses of The Who, The Stones and, yes, GBV.

Cringe.com is also celebrating a few anniversaries and milestones over the next several months. This October show marks 10 years since Cringe was conceived. Back in 1994, in response to a few local best of polls and music awards, we created a poll where anyone could nominate anyone for any category they wanted to make up. Subscribers and readers of our Live Shows calendar were asked to submit their votes and reviews. Those submissions were compiled and put to paper and email in January 1995 as the first issue of Cringe.
In commemoration, if you help us celebrate our birthday, we'll help you celebrate yours. Anyone with a birthday in October gets a copy of one of the Cringe.com/pilation CDs free with paid admission to the October 9 show. And don't feel slighted if your birthday isn't in October. We plan to host one of these birthday shows every month over the next year, so everyone should be eligible for a nice little present from Cringe eventually.
Little known useless fact: Cringe was almost called "The Joel Poll" because some girl liked it better than Cringe. But even I'm not that persistently cheesy and egocentric. We did still subtitle the first issue "The Joel Poll" though.
Funds raised at this and other support shows go toward paying for this and future Cringe.com/pilation volumes. Like all previous volumes, we hold at least one support show for the compilation before it comes out. While there is a slight chance we'll actually have the CDs for this show, we're not depending on it.
The official release show is scheduled for Saturday, October 30 at Little Brother's. Other support shows and birthday parties will be held throughout the coming months. We'll have more details as those shows are solidified.

CRINGE.COM COMPILATION V4.0 SELECTIONS
The final 20 songs for Cringe.com/pilation volume 4 have been selected:
The following consultants helped rank and select songs:
66 of the 72 bands (127 songs) received high marks from at least one of the consultants. Yep, that means the decisions were quite difficult and were not taken lightly.
I'll be in touch with all the bands that submitted soon. In short, if you are one of the bands selected and have broken up or have an issue with being on the comp, please contact me as soon as possible. Otherwise the bands selected should start working on getting a photo and any song or band information updates to me. Also, traditionally the artwork and/or layout for the compilations is done in part by a band on the comp. If you or your band would like to be involved in the artwork or layout for the compilation, let me know.

ABOUT THE COMPILATION SERIES
Each compilation in this series aims to expose local and regional bands and fans to each other.
Cringe.com released the first volume of its Cringe.com/pilation series on September 29, 2001. Volume 2.0 was released May 17, 2002. Both CDs are currently available at http://store.cringe.com/, Used Kid's Records, Magnolia Thunderpussy and through the bands on each CD.
We here at Cringe.com lovingly, but with tongue firmly in cheek, refer to "cringe" as the ever elusive Columbus sound (Seattle already took "grunge"), going so far as to adopt "The Columbus Sound" as a slogan on volume 1 and the entire site. Any interpretation of this slogan should be taken with a grain of salt and a couple aspirin.
Look for further information, links and online press kits at http://www.cringe.com/pilation/ as future shows approach and details are ironed out.
Cringe.com is an online zine covering the OSU/Short North area music scene. The zine started in 1995 as a poll of Live Shows subscribers. Live Shows was established in 1990 as an online calendar of OSU/Short North area music and dance events. Both are available on the World-Wide Web at http://www.cringe.com/.
As always, feel free to contact us any way ya can ...
