ABOUT THE BANDS

Di Di Mao (Columbus)
http://didi-mao.tripod.com/
These 3 ladies and 1 boy can rawk and make pretty noise, sometimes simultaneously. I'm sure there's some credit due to Jane's Addiction and grrl art rawk in general.

Test Planet (Columbus)
http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/222/test_planet.html
Test Planet kinda fits into that indie art pop space occupied by the likes of th Smashing Pumpkins, Jane's Addiction, John Lennon, XTC, the Cure and Radiohead. Plus they just won this year's th Blitz Local Stuff Rumble (http://www.theblitz.com/rumble.htm)!

The Stepford Five (Columbus)
http://www.stepfordfive.com/
Their recent release reveals an edgier, moodier side with their Afghan Whigs roots showing. Wait! Shhh. Anyone else hear the Church's "Under the Milky Way?" as sung by J. Mascis?

Go Evol Shiki! (Columbus)
http://www.goevolshiki.com/
I don't know if they're more Portished, Jesus and the Mary Chain, 4AD or rock guys with a few keyboards, but they've evolved yet again into something energetic yet moody. Electronic, yet human. Thoughtful, yet danceable. Dark, yet fun.

Ruby Vileos (Cincinnati)
http://www.rubyvileos.com/
Admittedly, I'm totally enamoured and intrigued by singer Ali Edwards' voice - easily my favorite Ohio vocalist. With members of the Ass Ponys and Snaggletooth, their open, spacious, if not slightly slanted, pop makes it easy to imagine Bjork or the Sugarcubes being from the sliver by the river rather than the great land of ice.

Soda vs. Pop (Columbus)
http://www.sodavspop.com/
Think indie boy rock in the realm of Tiara, Modest Mouse, Built to Spill and maybe even a bit of the Smiths.

ABOUT THE COMPILATION SERIES

Cringe.com released the first volume of its Cringe.com/pilation series on September 29, 2001. It is currently available at http://store.cringe.com/, Used Kid's Records, Magnolia Thunderpussy and through the bands on volume 1.

We here at Cringe.com lovingly, but with tongue firmly in cheek, refer to "cringe" as the ever elusive Columbus sound (Seattle already took "grunge"), going so far as to adopt "The Columbus Sound" as a slogan on volume 1 and the entire site. Any interpretation of this slogan should be taken with a grain of salt and a couple aspirin.

Look for further information, links and online press kits at http://www.cringe.com/pilation/ as future shows approach and details are ironed out.

Cringe.com is an online zine covering the OSU/Short North area music scene. The zine started in 1995 as a poll of Live Shows subscribers. Live Shows was established in 1990 as an online calendar of OSU/Short North area music and dance events. Both are available on the World-Wide Web at http://www.cringe.com/.

As always, feel free to contact us any way ya can ...
